LipAlign™ is a hydrocolloid medical adhesive tape designed to approximate and support the displaced soft tissue of the cleft lip. The tape is universal for patients born with a unilateral or a bilateral cleft lip.
A one-week-old infant with a complete bilateral cleft lip and palate (top photo) began treatment with LipAlign tape. The bottom photo shows the infant after two weeks of using the large-size LipAlign tape on the upper lip. Notice the retraction and centering of the premaxilla toward the midline. At this appointment, the infant was ready to insert the NoseAlign device, size #1 for further premaxilla retraction and approximation of the displaced nasolabial structures.
LipAlign Presurgical Cleft Lip Approximation Tape
INDICATION AND USAGE
LipAlign™ is a hydrocolloid cleft lip approximation medical adhesive tape that provides support and approximates the displaced soft tissue of the lips in patients born with cleft lips prior to primary lip and nose surgery.
The LipAlign™ adhesive tape is used on the upper lip and cheeks for patients born with a unilateral or a bilateral cleft lip with or without a cleft palate, before the primary surgery of the cleft lip to:
1) Approximate the displaced cleft lips
2) Approximate the displaced nasal alar base
3) Approximate the displaced alveolar segments
3) Facilitate optimal conditions for primary reconstruction surgery
LipAlign medical adhesive tapes can be applied independently and with the NoseAlign® device.
The LipAlign tapes are used by prescription only and under the supervision of a licensed physician or a dentist. The LipAlign tape can be used starting one week after birth up to the first primary reconstruction surgery of the lip and nose. The tape is discontinued immediately after the primary repair of cleft lip and nose. The LipAlign® tapes are only sold to a licensed physician or dentist.
FREQUENCY AND DURATION OF ADMINISTRATION
The LipAlign™ tape can be utilized from one to two weeks after birth until the initial primary reconstruction surgery for the cleft lip and nose. The application involves securing the LipAlign™ tape to the upper lip and cheeks, bringing the cleft lip segments close together. This cleft lip approximating tape is universal for infants born with both unilateral and bilateral clefts (complete and incomplete). Each LipAlign™ tape is intended for use for one day and should be replaced with a new one. If the tape becomes soiled with saliva, sweat, or during feeding, it may need earlier replacement. The tape can be worn daily for 20-22 hours and must be removed for daily cleaning and hygiene.
The LipAlign™ tape is available in three different sizes and the treating provider will prescribe the appropriate size of the lip tape depending on the size of the initial cleft and the reduction of cleft width with use.
A one-week-old infant with a complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (top photo). The bottom photograph shows the placement of the LipAlign tape (large size) on the upper lip. Note the approximation of the cleft lip and centering the position of the nose towards the midline immediately after placement of the LipAlign tape. One week after LipAlign tape use, this infant will be ready for the NoseAlign device insertion.
